2006.09.09 There are probably not any places in Asia where you can be driving along the coast and come upon a sign that read: Nude Beaches Next Left. The truth is that there aren't many places where you can take it all off to swim and sunbathe in Asia. The cultures are too conservative . . . ![]() In fact, there several countries tolerate nudity on the beach. In most of them, you're on shaky legal ground while you're in the buff. But in a handful of spots the risks are relatively low and the practice of nudity (at least by Western tourists) is long established. ![]() Thailand Although stripping completely at the beach is technically illegal anywhere in Thailand, there is at least one beach where people regularly report being able to swim and sunbathe nude. The beach is on the island of Koh Phangan - an island in the Gulf of Thailand about 12 miles north of Koh Samui. ![]() The main attraction to Koh Phangan is the monthly Full Moon Party that draw between seven thousand and ten thousand participants each month. The parties run dusk-to-dawn and including music and dancing, jugglers and fire-eaters, alcohol and (of course) swimming. The parties have been taking place every full moon now for about 10 years. ![]() Leela Beach on Koh Phangan is evidently too small to make the maps. But it is close to Had Rin (sometimes "Hat Rin") Beach. The 70 bungalows on Leela Beach occupy some 15 acres of land, which, according to management's webpage, "assures privacy." Is it legal to go nude there? Certainly not. It's not legal anyplace in Thailand. Does it matter? Evidently not. Several reports list it as the "de facto" nude beach. It's isolated enough that the locals either don't know or don't care. And nudity is at least tolerated. ![]() Philippines Persistent rumors about nude beaches in the Philippines continue to surface. Unfortunately there are few details available. There seems to be at least one location, though, where the rumors are more substantial: Palawan. Boayan Island, in the province of Palawan, includes a privately owned property that can be rented for just one couple. And their honeymoon package includes a statement (w/ photo) about being able to take "a naked morning swim." The cost of a stay at the private lagoon (with a staff of six) is less than staying in a five-star resort. ![]() Indonesia Bali is also the persistent subject of rumors to the effect that nude beaches exist there. According to Bali Nude Villa Vacation, Bali trip can combine sightseeing (clothed!) with ample opportunity to be nude. At the villa, and in private swimming pool, nudity will pose no problem. Generally, skinny-dipping and tanning in the buff will be old hat to villa staffs. Guests can also seek out private beaches where favorite pursuit can be practiced. ![]() Morever, some resorts are clothing-optional. Bali au Naturel is a gay-owned and managed resort located right on the beach in Northern Bali, it accommodates guests who enjoy clothing-optional environment. The main clientele is male gay who enjoy nudism, although lesbians, transgender and other gay-friendly guests are welcome. |
