2019.09.27 New York Upstate
World Naked Bike Ride Day 2019 is returning to Buffalo, and yes, there really will be partially clothed and totally naked people riding bicycles through the streets of Upstate New York's largest city.
The event is more popular than you might think. Hundreds of rider will show up "bare as they dare" to take to the streets. And you can bet on plenty of spectators. But the event is more than just a spectacle.
Here's what you need to know about Buffalo's 2019 Naked Bike Ride Day.
WHAT IS WORLD NAKED BIKE RIDE DAY?
First of all, it's not just one day. Cities around the world have Naked Bike Ride Day on different days every year. Chicago had it in June, San Francisco had it March, Buffalo's having it in July.
Other than that, it's exactly what it sounds like. People take as many clothes off as they are comfortable with, hop on a bike (or a skateboard or in some roller-skates) and ride through the city streets. Some wear underpants, some wear body paint, some just wear pasties.
YEAH BUT WHY NAKED? AND WHY ON BIKES?
The event aims to raise awareness of the negative impact of car culture and "oil addiction," as well as raise awareness of bicycle riders on roads.
It also promotes body positivity, bicycle use and sustainable living.
The event's slogan is, "Celebrating freedom from oil, and the beauty of people."
"Our naked bodies will symbolize the vulnerability of cyclists on the roads."
HOW DO I JOIN/SEE IT?

WHAT IS ALLOWED?
1. Topless nudity
2. You are allowed to be clothed and bring clothes with you
3. You may ride bikes, skates, skateboards
WAIT, WHAT ABOUT BOTTOMLESS NUDITY?
Caught that did you?
While it's perfectly fine as far as the event organizers are concerned, New York only allows topless nudity, legally. Police are within their rights to ticket riders who are displaying anything below the belt, so bare at your own risk, and cover up, if asked by a law enforcement officer.
Tip: If you're concerned, but want to wear your full birthday suit, just stay toward the middle of the pack.
OTHER INFORMATION
2019 will mark the Fifth annual iteration of Buffalo's Naked Bike Ride.
Past events have seen participation numbers over 400, so you can definitely expect a spectacle if you're along the route.
There will be a private party after the ride for participants only with a $10 suggested donation. All collected money will go directly back into the event, helping fund the space, DJ, snacks and more.
The event organizers want to make it clear that Naked Bike Ride Day is not a nudism party. It is intended to be a form of extreme free speech. Here's their statement:
"WNBR IS a people powered happening bringing radical attention against oil addiction; It's not primarily a naturist party. It IS a big fun ride for able area cyclists; It's NOT for the frail nor fliers/drivers. It IS an extreme free speech exercise trying to save the planet; It's NOT Mardis Gras. If you are distant or uncertain please read more details."
