National Nude Hiking Day has been celebrated in earnest despite a ban on the activity put in place by park authorities in Colorado.
Rangers had warned trekkers they could be kicked off public land if they took part in June 21's event, but that didn't stop enthusiasts stripping off and posting photos online.
Daredevils from across America took to Instagram to share images of themselves enjoying the rugged terrain with witty captions like, 'you might say we're peaking'.
One woman showed herself on the top of Calebs Peak, Connecticut, wearing little more than a backpack. She wrote next to the post: 'Couldn't resist'.
The posts came despite warnings from Colorado Parks and Wildlife that nude trekkers could be ticketed for indecent exposure.
A spokesman told
Denver 7: 'We would ask them to leave or put on clothing.'
And the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), said it would intervene if other park users were disturbed by the practice.
Courtney Whiteman, a public affairs specialist with BLM, said: 'Anyone participating should remember that state and county law apply on public lands, as well.'
Any naked hikers who feel unwelcome in the USA could try going to Germany instead, where there is a special walking trail for nudists.
The 11-mile trail, which runs between the town of Dankerode to the Wippertal dam, near Leipzig, formally opened in 2010.
