Buffalo will once again participate in the
World Naked Bike Ride on Saturday, July 9. Buffalo hosted the event
last year for the first time, and that went by without a hitch, the
Buffalo News reports. Around 300 riders showed up in 2015, according to
Buffalo Rising.
The World Naked Bike Ride, held annually in various cities around the world since 2004, aims to raise awareness of cycle safety, protest against oil dependency, promote healthy body images and draw attention to environmental and human rights issues.
The event invites people to "come as bare as you dare," which means full nudity isn't required. Riders often wear underwear, bathing suits or body paint. Organizers do, however, warn that police have the right to ticket people for public nudity and no alcohol is allowed during the event. Organizers also note that riders should expect people to take photographs throughout the event, and some bystanders may get "grabby."
According to the Facebook event page, the ride checkpoint will start at a location to be announced between 7 and 7:30 pm. Riders will be sent to the actual start point for the ride from there. Skaters are also welcomed to participate. Participants should expect to follow guides along the route. Those wishing to support the ride without actually riding should meet at Bidwell Parkway and Elmwood Avenue. The ride will go from 8-10 p.m. for a few miles, and riders should expect potentially chilly conditions.
