It’s scientifically impossible to have a perfect relationship with your in-laws.
Maybe yours give the kids sugar before bedtime or endlessly nag you about having another baby.
But in a competition for the craziest in-laws, *Steph is a clear winner as she discovered during her first stay at her husband's parents' house recently.
“Everything was fine until I found out my father-in-law is practically a nudist,” the US woman shared on Reddit.
“I saw him watching TV without clothes on when I came home from dinner with my husband.
“After his shower, he just walked around the house naked to the laundry.
“He can’t even wear a towel.”
"My husband told me I was overreacting"
If seeing your father-in-law’s bits after dinner isn’t enough to turn your stomach, then Steph’s husband’s response definitely will.
When Steph confronted her husband about his dad’s nudist habits – he simply told her that it was “very common for him”.
“I told my father-in-law I found it very disrespectful that he can’t wear clothes around others,” she added.
“This led to an argument where he kept responding with it’s his house and he can do what he wants.
“I said 'I’m done' and booked a hotel for the night and changed my flight home.
“My husband told me I was overreacting and didn't support me. He’s currently still at his parents’ house while I’m back home.”
"This is pretty basic etiquette"
Reddit was pretty divided on this one – kicking off an epic debate about who was the real villain in this unlikely tale.
Many commenters thought the FIL was in the wrong for being a “bad host” and refusing to cover up.
“This is pretty basic etiquette,” one man said.
“It's not as if he is gonna die by wearing some underwear for a few days,” another added.
“I was thinking maybe it’s a recent development?” a man said.
“Like Dad recently got back from Europe and realised his lifelong desire to be naked isn’t as crazy as he once thought.”
"Your husband really should've warned you. He is an asshole"
Others thought that the FIL could do what he wanted at home - but blamed Steph’s husband for not giving her a heads-up.
“Your husband could have told you in advance, which would have affected your decision to stay with them,” one mum said.
“Wow, your husband really should've warned you that his dad is a nudist. He's the real asshole of this story,” another added.
“None of this would have happened if your husband had told you about it,” she said.
“Maybe he could have talked to his parents about making you feel welcomed in their home.
“Your husband not warning or supporting you is unacceptable, he is an asshole.”
"It's just a penis, not a BDSM torture house"
But there was a strong faction of commenters who thought Steph had completely overreacted.
“You had no grounds to boss your FIL around in his own house,” one man said.
“For god's sake, it's just a penis, not a BDSM torture house, a bunch of guns and swords adepts, or a religious conversion house,” another commenter added.
“Honestly flying home was an overreaction,” another said.
“He is allowed to be nude - he is allowed to not want to wear clothing in his house.
"I just don't see why you could not stay at the hotel and still do stuff with the in-laws in a public setting.”
