Maxinne Björk shared the controversial photo with her 46,000 Instagram followers.
The bizarre snap showed the topless blonde with blood smeared on her face and chest, revealing her unshaved underarms.
Björk, who calls herself a fan of yoga and the tantric movement, said the picture was to promote "acceptance and love".
Sharing a long caption under the post, she wrote: "I just came home all emotional with lots on my mind that I just pushed aside because I didn't have space to deal with it in the moment."
She went on: "I sat down and did some deep breathing, and all of a sudden felt a strong urge to cover myself in my life-giving fluids as a woman.
"So without really thinking of why or anything else, I just did."
Originally from Sweden but now living in Bali, Björk also referred to family problems in her life.
"The family situation we are in right now is just very draining," she said, "but that's life."
She added: "And that's exactly how it is supposed to be in this moment. Accept and love."
The picture quickly racked up more than 3,000 likes, but not everyone was onboard.
Many commenters called her "disturbed".
Björk disabled comments for the photo, but later hit out at her photos in another post.
She wrote: "So interesting how people can't accept that we all are different and have different views about life."
Some Instagram users were not understanding and one added: "Cringe, please visit a psychotherapist."
The model is no stranger to controversy, having gone viral in the past for her frequent nude snaps and intimate details about her vagina massages.
